reþe (OSw) raiþi (OGu) reiði (ON) noun

The word reþe on its own has the meanings ‘driving equipment’, ‘tackle’, ‘tools’, but in conjunction with the word roþ it takes on the meaning ‘provisions’. In VmL this expression refers to the statutory duties of a free man. In this case, they are mentioned in a rather puzzling passage in connection with a homebred slave who, on his death, leaves property and possessions in the form of a house and its contents. It seems that his kin could maintain that he was, in fact, free and lay claim to those possessions rather than letting them revert to his master. In UL the phrase, reþe ok roþ, refers to the actual personnel and provisions for the levy.
