The meaning extended to cover the whole of the maternal side of the family, the maternal inheritance (as opposed to the paternal) and the ancestral land inherited from the mother, although the expression möþrinis jorþ in full does occur. Sometimes the same word was employed with more than one of these meanings in the same sentence. The noun in the possessive case was also used adjectivally to mean ‘maternal’, to relate to other specific parts of an inheritance, e.g. ancestral home, movables.
